The Arab Spring, the Iranian Revolution and the Catalan referendum held on 1 October 2017 provide clear examples of the role and power of social media in today's society. During these mobilisations, thousands of images and videos of police attacks recorded by citizens went viral on social platforms. How might they destabilise governments?
At the same time mobilisations are taking place, a lot of misinformation is spread across the internet because users don't verify its source. It is in that moment when “fake news” appears as a trending topic. But does fake news really describe what is going on? Some experts say it is used by some, such as Donald Trump, to discredit mass media.
