When Syrian refugees Enas, Ishra and Duua arrived in Turkey, they suddenly found themselves having to take on roles traditionally reserved only for men. Spurred on by the need to survive, and not having much time to think about what they were doing, the three women quickly set out to find work. And they succeeded. The benefits of this success would change their lives dramatically: they found jobs, bought homes and were able to provide their children an education. These women unexpectedly achieved autonomy and freedom and, for the first time, had control over their own lives. The cost of such freedom was being a victim of war.
